Puppy Pursuit Academy is an arithmetic race. The learner picks a puppy, chooses a difficulty, and answers sums to drive their runner forward against the field. That framing suits number facts particularly well, because arithmetic fluency is built by volume, and a race supplies a reason to answer forty questions in a sitting when a worksheet of twenty would have been abandoned at eight.

The question bank is addition, subtraction and multiplication, banded into difficulty tiers. The easy tier stays inside single digits, the middle tier crosses ten and introduces times tables, and the harder tier pushes further. That progression matters: crossing ten is a genuine conceptual step for young children, not just bigger numbers, and it is worth staying on the easier tier until sums within ten are automatic rather than counted.

Because the race rewards speed, it exposes the difference between recall and calculation. A child who knows 7 + 8 instantly pulls ahead of one who counts up from seven, even though both reach the right answer. That gap is the whole point of fact fluency, and it is far more visible in a race than on a marked page. Use it diagnostically: whichever facts slow them down are the ones worth drilling.

The main risk is guessing. Multiple-choice answers under time pressure can be attacked by elimination rather than arithmetic, and a child can place well while learning little. A quick check is to pause mid-race and ask how they got the last answer. If they cannot say, drop to an easier difficulty so answers come from knowing rather than from luck.

Offline, work on the specific facts the race exposed as slow. Times-table triangles, where you cover one corner of a fact family and name the missing number, build recall in both directions. Counting change, splitting objects into equal groups, and doubling recipe quantities all rehearse the same facts with something physical to hold. Two or three minutes at a time, often, beats one long session.

Signs of progress: answering without visible counting, holding accuracy as the difficulty rises, choosing a harder tier voluntarily, and reaching for a known fact rather than working sums out from scratch. When arithmetic becomes automatic, word problems get easier almost immediately, because the child's attention is free for the reasoning instead of the numbers.
