Collecting targets keeps the trail moving, speed climbs as the run continues, and questions interrupt at intervals. The mix is deliberately harder than a single-subject quiz because the learner cannot settle into one mode of thinking, and switching domains on demand is closer to how knowledge is actually used.

The valuable mechanism here is retrieval rather than recognition. Producing an answer from memory under mild time pressure is one of the better-evidenced ways to move knowledge into long-term storage, and it is considerably more effective than rereading notes. The arcade pacing supplies that pressure without the atmosphere of a test, which is why children will do far more retrieval practice here than they would from flashcards.

Rising difficulty keeps the game in the productive zone. As the learner improves, speed and obstacle density climb to match, so they are neither bored nor swamped. Progress shows as: accuracy holding as speed increases, faster recall on repeated topics, willingness to attempt subjects they used to skip, and beginning to notice connections between areas — that a logic pattern resembles a maths one, for instance. Cross-disciplinary noticing is the highest-value outcome here and the hardest to teach any other way.
